"Gamelan Workshop"

For the seventh year in succession, the Wharfedale Festival of Performing Arts was enabled to stage a workshop for children with special educational needs. This was made possible by the continued generous support of Booths Supermarkets.

The work seen was the result of work done in two workshops involving blind and partially sighted children aged between 9 and 12 years in which they have learnt about these traditional Indonesian instruments’ history and how to play them.

The Gamelan was chosen because it requires several people to play the music successfully and everyone who takes part experiences making the music together.

Councillor Richard Harker, executive board member for Learning, said:

“Music is an excellent way to improve sensory development and the use of interesting instruments will add to the enjoyment of the children taking part in this performance.”

The trip to Ilkley was organised by Education Leeds Sensory Service,. which provides education for deaf and blind children, and Artforms which provides advice and support for arts education through learning projects and programmes.

The Wharfedale Festival of Performing Arts is proud to be leading the field in the production of workshops for special needs, which are at the cutting edge of festival activity, above all other Festivals in the British and International Federation of Music Festivals.

The Management Committee would like to express warmest thanks to the tutors, the schools and all who have in any way supported and facilitated this important and very special project, not least to Diane Paterson from Y A M S E N, (Yorkshire Association for Music and Special Educational Needs), and the Education Leeds Sensory Service and Artforms, and also to our sponsor, Mr Edwin Booth, of Booths Supermarkets, without whose continued support we should be unable to proceed. Thanks also to all for lending support as an audience.

"Off By Heart" Choir
This choir is made up of adults with learning disabilities, staff from centres and various support staff from YAMSEN.

There are between 30 and 40 of us and we meet usually on the 2nd and 4th Fridays in the month from 11.00 -12.30pm at The West Park Centre in Spen Lane in Leeds 16 –off the outer ring road in Leeds.

We have sung at The Rothwell Music Festival in March and then last Sunday we were the lead choir at Ripon Cathedral for a service for people with Learning Disabilities from all over Ripon Diocese.

This proved to be a very exciting afternoon – our choir sang 3 songs on their own with the whole congregation learning the third song. Two out of three songs had been written especially for the choir and Judith Larkin from Harrogate sang a solo.

The service had drama, singing, dance with saris, prayers led by Bethany and Rebecca Evason of the Jenny Ruth Workshops and we ended up with a procession all round the cathedral led by the Bishop of Knaresborough –Bishop James Bell.

We welcome new members – contact Mavis West through West Park Centre, Spen Lane Leeds LS16 5BE ........Tel: 0113 2786521
